Week in Tech #5 – July 7, 2025
The AI Gold Rush, Genetic Breakthroughs, and the Complex Future of Tech Regulation
This week's main focus: Rising AI subscription costs, groundbreaking genetic AI from Google, controversies around European AI regulations, and surprising developments in Web3 and robotics.
Executive Summary
This week once again saw AI providers push subscription costs skyward, signaling a new premium on AI-driven innovation as Perplexity introduced a $200/month plan. Google DeepMind made groundbreaking strides with AlphaGenome, unlocking the potential of previously misunderstood segments of DNA.
Meanwhile, Europe's top companies, including Airbus and Mercedes-Benz, urged caution on the EU's ambitious AI Act, highlighting potential regulatory challenges that could stifle innovation and competitive advantage. Tesla provided a compelling vision for autonomy and robotics through its Optimus project, while Google Cloud's surprising entry into Web3 revitalized interest in decentralized AI solutions.
Finally, despite mixed sentiments about Twitter’s xAI, their Grok 4 model showcased impressive reasoning capabilities, marking another key development in the ongoing AI model competition. Additionally, the fascinating visuals from a twice-exploded star reminded us of the enduring allure and mystery of space exploration.
Future Predictions
1. AI Premium Era
As AI subscription prices surge, organizations will face critical decisions about balancing powerful capabilities with cost efficiency, shaping an era where advanced AI becomes an exclusive asset. Previously we feel that iPhone set a new levels of high prices currently we see the same trend in race between AI tools with higher and higher prices but are they giving real benefits? We will see in next year if the answer is yes me personally I don’t see huge benefits so far. Honestly I’m more align with what Apple and Google is doing with they products and deep embedding of AI into a product itself.
2. Genetic AI Revolution
AI-driven genetic analysis tools, like Google's AlphaGenome, will rapidly evolve, significantly impacting medicine, personalized healthcare, and biotechnology industries. This is an interesting trend which could bring real benefits in medicine but not only.
3. Regulatory Challenges in Europe
The backlash against the EU AI Act underscores the tension between innovation and regulation, likely influencing future policy decisions and global competitive dynamics. Yes Europ have many problems with regulations but they are not bad, the implementation is wrong. We as EU should focus on collaboration between government, universities and business and starting from this perspective think how we can regulate AI or other technology.
4. Web3 Revival through AI
Google’s unexpected embrace of Web3 will drive renewed interest in decentralized solutions, potentially leading to hybrid models of centralized AI platforms interacting with decentralized blockchain ecosystems. This was a big surprise for me but when I’m thinking on this it makes sense to create a decentralized ecosystems connected with AI Agents. The main benefit of Blockchain technology is a unchangeable contract.
